A retail gem has emerged in the charming community of Fredericksburg, Texas. Nestled between Jabberwocky and Rockbox Theater on North Llano Street, Cate Zane is just around the corner from Main Street shopping. The modern interior reflects a crafted mix of traditional and contemporary “fine things” featuring 19th and 20th century art, landscape photography and antiques. By adding a unique mix of contemporary, finely crafted jewelry, Cate Zane gives Fredericksburg and its visitors an irresistible and affordable shopping experience rich in history and interesting stories of artisans proud of their craft.

Cate Zane is pleased to feature work by the following Texas artists:

Talley’s relationship with Enchanted Rock spans 42 years, combining childhood camping memories at “The Rock” with his current painting techniques that capture the unique effects of soft atmospheric light upon sunrise and sunset subject matter, while simultaneously serving as a place of spiritual renewal. Emotionally connecting the viewer to the delicate and hidden splendors of Enchanted Rock’s panoramic views and rugged trails, serves as Talley’s primary approach to painting this special Hill Country environ.

Deb Mason is a local Fredericksburg tonalist painter whose work is reminiscent of tonalist painters of the past. Her serene landscapes draw you into the fields and streams in her paintings and you can hear nature at it’s finest hours.

Hank Zane’s “Jeweled Earth” studies and paintings of Texas’ most remote landscapes were created over a ten year period while exploring the backroads and mountain trails of the Chisos, Guadalupe and Sierra Diablo ranges. Zane’s paintings represent expressionist interpretations of the vibrant-abstracted landscape found “West of the Pecos”.

Native to the Southwest, Nina Cobb Walker is a progressive modern Classical Impressionist. Having been trained in the tradition of Classical Russian Impressionism, Nina applies the traditional philosophy and techniques of Impressionism to her own work.  Her paintings, not only depict the Southwest, but also to landscapes across the United States and Europe in a contemporary context. As an active participant in the art community, she has been shown in exhibits across the nation.

Cynthia LaBuda grew up drawing and sketching on a small farm in eastern Nebraska and began developing her artistic skills at an early age. Raised on the land, with cattle and horses, she experienced a deep affection for the rural landscape and lifestyle. Cynthia’s work, described as “atmospheric”, explores the beauty of the visible world and the patterns made by man’s interaction with the landscape, with the intention of enhancing the viewer’s connection to nature. Cynthia has studied with Pennsylvania artists Christian David and Jason Tako and Utah artists Douglas Fryer, Kathryn Stats and Michael Workman. She resides and maintains her studio in Fort Worth, Texas.

My path has become clear to me, and I am very thankful.

Responding to the world around me in a visual way is one of my earliest
memories and has become my life’s work. My art expresses a unique part
of myself. The possiblity that something I create might connect with
another being is a special bonus.

Many years ago, husband-wife founders, Steve and Kay discovered their love for art, antiques, and the talented artisans who faithfully braved the Pacific Northwest weather to sell their crafts in the Pike Place Market. They were inspired to open their first store on Puget Sound, and explored many a worldwide countryside searching for unique pieces to capture the imagination of their customers who were searching for something special for their homes and loved ones.

Fast forward to their move to Lakeway, Texas in 1993 where they raised three great sons between marketing and retail careers. Many getaway weekends were spent in Fredericksburg where they discovered charming B&B’s, wonderful wine, fresh peaches and produce, great German food and exceptional shopping. It was on one of those weekend trips several years ago they discovered in a local bookstore, the work of Zane Grey, author of “The Rainbow Trail” which led them to pursue their own rainbow trail in Fredericksburg. The name “Cate Zane” is attributed in part to Zane Grey’s spunk and literary encouragement, and the owner’s “Texas” nickname which is Cate.
